OEM rubber exhaust mounts stretch, harden, lose shape and go brittle over time which is a feature of rubber. This can lead to rattling, knocking, scraping and even damage to the exhaust system itself.
The degradation of rubber exhaust hangers is usually accelerated by fitting stiffer suspension to the vehicle, stiffer engine mounts (or engine mount inserts) or even from engine/exhaust tuning which is producing higher exhaust temperatures.
